Aracena & Riotinto Visit

See the spectacular countryside of the Sierra de Huelva mountains, plus visit the mine made famous by the British.

We begin in Aracena, visiting the castle with its wonderful views, the old town hall in the Medieval and Renaissance square, and the ham museum to learn about the famous Jamon Iberico that comes from this region. We finish in the Gruta de las Maravillas, an incredible system of huge caves only discovered relatively recently.

Lunch will be taken in one of the typical local restaurants where you will have the chance to try the local food, and afterwards we visit a small, unspoilt village, Linares de la Sierra, that retains its ancient customs. Then we take a scenic drive to the mines of Riotinto, mentioned in the bible as the legendary Mines of Salomon. They were exploited during 4000 years by the Phoenicians, Romans and lastly the British during the Victorian age. You will get the opportunity to visit the museum with a working replica of the Roman mine, see a carriage specially built to transport Queen Victoria, and visit a traditional house in the English district full of Victoriana. Apart from this we will get views of the mine itself, which makes you think you are looking at a Martian landscape. A truly impressive experience.
