Aracena and Riotinto tour Print E-mail

ImageThis is a full-day tour, departing from Seville centre at 09:00.

Aracena tour

We take you directly to the beautiful town of Aracena on the edge of the Sierra de Huelva mountains. Starting at the castle with its wonderful views, we then walk down into the town to visit the Old Town Hall in the Medieval and Renaissance square.

After a break for coffee we have a visit to the ham museum, to learn about the famous Jamon Iberico, the best of which is found in this region. The museum is very interesting, giving you the opportunity to learn about the animal, how it is bred and fed, and how it is used for many different types of meat, not just the ham. The museum uses the latest technology to provide a unique experience.

Our last stop in Aracena before lunch is at the famous "Gruta de las Maravillas", an incredible system of caves only discovered relatively recently. There is one gallery as high as the Cathedral in Seville!!

Lunch will be taken in one of the typical local restaurants where you will have the chance to try the local food, the ham of course but there are many more local dishes, including a wonderful range of mushrooms from the surrounding countryside.

After lunch we visit a small, unspoilt village that hasn't changed in years. The tiny central square is still closed off for bullfights now and again, and it has a stone fountain specially designed to wash clothes - this is how it was done in the days before washing machines, in the case of Andalucia not long ago.

Riotinto tour

After the village we drive through stunning scenery on route to a complete change - the mines of Riotinto. Although the Roman's mined here, the mine really gained fame when the British exploited it during the times of Queen Victoria. You will get the opportunity to visit the mine museum with a working replica of the mine itself, see a carriage specially built to transport Queen Victoria, and visit a traditional house in the English district full of Victoriana. Apart from this we will get views of the mine itself, which makes you think you are looking at a Martian landscape. A truly impressive experience.

We return to Seville at 18:30pm.
